The Fishes are Doomed by Supply and Demand.

The Fishes are Doomed by Supply and Demand.

Sustainable fishing is a myth, which is one of the reasons the fishing industry resists efforts to investigate where and how fish are caught, how they are shipped, trans-shipped and marketed. Some 40% of commercial fishing catches are illegal.

What we are seeing is the economics of extinction. Short term investment for short-term gain. When a fish species is diminished in numbers in the sea, the value of the species increases in the market. The lower the availability, the greater the cost.

Added to this are marine conservation organizations willing to slap a “sustainabilty” sticker on the product in exchange for financial considerations.

Industrialized heavy gear fishing is diminishing life in the sea every day, and around the globe. Super Trawlers, 100 mile-long lines and gill nets, purse seiners on a 24/7 mission to gulp and devour anything and everything in their path, where they take what they want and discard the rest as bycatch.

Nothing is safe, krill, small fishes, big fishes, invertebrates, crustaceans, sea birds, turtles, sharks, kelp and seaweed. Life being sacrificed for greed and always justified, until there will be nothing left to justify.
