SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD IS A MARKETING TERM FOR THE FISHING INDUSTRY.

IT DOES NOT EXIST

March16, 2024

The Captain Paul Watson Foundation and Neptune’s Pirates have always maintained that there is NO SUCH THING AS SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD. This is merely a marketing greenwashing phrase to enable dead fish sellers globally to continue business as usual, profiting from the demise of the oceans.

Today we were made aware of a post showing the John Paul DeJoria with the following text:

“Love Seafood? You can help save the ocean! Choose sustainably sourced seafood and support ocean conservation efforts. Together, we can ensure a healthy ocean for future generations.”

The sponsored advert post included hashtags for Ocean Conservation, sustainable seafood, and responsible consumption.

It was allegedly a sponsored post on our official FB page. This post claims to have been placed on the Captain Paul Watson Foundation Facebook page on January 30th, yet none of us have ever seen it? Interestingly various people from Sea Shepherd Global all saw it and commented and shared, quickly suggesting that we are hypocritical! We would have thought even SSG supporters would have seen through this as they all know our hard stance on sustainable fishing.

However, I have publicly spoken out against Sea Shepherd Global and Sea Shepherd Australia’s collaboration with Austral Seafoods and their support of what they call “sustainable” seafood. All very suspicious and we are investigating this.

In the meantime, I would like to clarify and make it very clear that the Captain Paul Watson Foundation does not recognize that there is such a thing as “sustainable seafood”.

We condemn all commercial fishing, and we hold the position that commercial fishing poses a grave threat to the future of life and diversity in the sea.

The post is absurd. Why would we open a post with “Love Seafood”? This is so against everything we stand for. Why would we say eating seafood would save the Ocean? A ludicrous statement. There is no such thing as carefully sourced seafood.

This post was unauthorized and contrary to the objectives and policies of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation.

Who benefits from such a post? Certainly not ocean conservation and certainly not us.

SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD IS A MARKETING TERM FOR THE FISHING INDUSTRY AND IS NOTHING MORE THAN A GREENWASHING MYTH.
