Two Dead Whalers Rotting On the Beach

Two Dead Whalers Rotting On the Beach

Two killers lie beached like dying whales, Bleeding rust onto volcanic sand, We pirates have some passionate tales, This our unique brand, sunk by our hand. Lying dead on a cold northern beach. Rotting for over three long decades, Victims forever out of their reach, On this lonely strand playing charades. Evil permeates the wooden decks. The stench of death lingers in the air, Extraordinary wondrous wrecks, So lovely in utter disrepair. Coronado and Howitt did that job, Courageously, passionately,…

24 Days Before Departure

24 Days Before Departure

May 7, 2023 Meet Kristján Loftsson, a modern-day Captain Ahab. It’s hard to believe that there are men living today who harbor an obsession with killing whales. Kristján was born in 1943. He first began whaling at the age of 13 as a scout on one of his father’s harpoon vessels. He became CEO of his father’s company Hvalur hf in 1974 after the death of his father. This one man is responsible for the deaths of more whales than…

THE VIRTUES OF PIRACY

THE VIRTUES OF PIRACY

The Howler Magazine   April 30, 2023 Captain Paul Watson Full disclosure: I am a real, legitimate pirate and quite proud of it. My legitimacy as a pirate was confirmed in 2014 by the 9th U.S. Circuit Federal Court Judge Alex Kozinski, who wrote in his verdict that my actions in defending whales from the unlawful operations of the Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean were legitimately the actions of a pirate.  I was not charged or punished for being a…

25 DAYS UNTIL DEPARTURE

25 DAYS UNTIL DEPARTURE

May 6, 2023 What is a ship without a crew? What is a crew without a ship? What is a Ship and Crew without a land support base? The ship and crew are the means. The mission is the why, The support base is the how? Together we are a team united by passion, courage, imagination and persistence. With just 25 days before departure, I would like to thank all of the crew that have made the ship ready. Thank…

Humility and Perspective

May 5, 2023      Captain Paul Watson’s Newsletter from the Church of Biocentrism In 1543, less than 500 years ago, Nicolaus Copernicus got into some serious trouble with the Catholic Church when he simply pointed out his quite accurate observation that the Earth went around the Sun. It’s hard to understand today just how much of a shock this was to the anthropocentric worldview that once held that we were the center of the known universe. With this revelation the “Copernican Principle” came…

COUNTDOWN – 26 DAYS UNTIL DEPARTURE

COUNTDOWN – 26 DAYS UNTIL DEPARTURE

May 5, 2023 Captain John Paul Jones once said, “I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm’s way.” This is a philosophy I have practiced all my life. A ship is our most important asset. It has to be strong, long range and fast. The John Paul DeJoria fills the bill in all three categories and thus is ideal for what we need in a ship to…

The Fishes are Doomed by Supply and Demand.

The Fishes are Doomed by Supply and Demand.

May 3, 2023 Sustainable fishing is a myth, which is one of the reasons the fishing industry resists efforts to investigate where and how fish are caught, how they are shipped, trans-shipped and marketed. Some 40% of commercial fishing catches are illegal. What we are seeing is the economics of extinction. Short term investment for short-term gain. When a fish species is diminished in numbers in the sea, the value of the species increases in the market. The lower the…

May 3, 2023 Disclaimer: I am not allowed to mention the name of a certain organization I founded and led for 45 years, thus I am forced to refer to them by another name.
