Closing In On Iceland

Closing In On Iceland

June 16, 2023 The John Paul DeJoria is closing in on Iceland. We have been moving slow because the Whalers have been delayed. We are confident that we will be on station when they send out the first harpoon vessel Loftsson has refitted both his ships and installed new harpoons. He has no intention of stopping whaling next year. He intends to kill up to 200 endangered fin whales: we intend to stop him. So far our passage from New York…

BLOODY SUNDAY

BLOODY SUNDAY

June 15, 2023 This picture represents the absolutely insane hypocrisy of the whale killing pseudo-Christians of the Danish Faroe Islands. A family of self-aware sentient beings, slaughtered, their bodies laid out before a church like some pagan sacrifice to their god. I remember meeting with former Prime Minister Atli Dam in 1985 when he told me that the Grind was a gift from God, as if it is an intimate part of their religious beliefs. The blood of innocents pouring…

ORCAS AND ICEBERGS

ORCAS AND ICEBERGS

June 14, 2023 Yesterday, while moving through the wonderfully calm waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, we passed a pod of Orcas and an iceberg. We decided to transit through the Gulf of St. Lawrence from Cabot Strait to the Strait of Belle Isle to save time and to avoid bad weather east of Newfoundland. It was not without hassle.  The Canadian Coast Guard harassed us, demanding certificates that we are not required to have and insisting that we…

THANK YOU SAMMARYE LEWIS

THANK YOU SAMMARYE LEWIS

June 13, 2023 When I was ousted from SSCS, one of the first to openly support me was Sammarye Lewis, the chapter head for SSCS NorCal (Northern California). Sammarye was one of the original founders of the NorCal chapter of SSCS in 2011, and held a coordinator/admin role until July 2022, when in her own words, she resigned in disgust, and in protest, against the “SSCS new direction” and the “traitorous, reprehensible treatment of Captain Paul Watson.” A strong supporter,…

CLARITY

CLARITY

June 12, 2023 I am constantly having to correct the misinformation being posted by SS Global. This is a response to a supporter asking questions and a questionnaire with their answers sent to SS supporters. I have taken the liberty of responding to their misinformation. The initial question was why I was removed from Sea Shepherd SS ANSWER: Not everyone at Sea Shepherd is a board member. He was not removed from Sea Shepherd, but from the Board (which, again,…

Dr. Roger Payne

Dr. Roger Payne

June 11,  2023 It was with great sadness that we heard that Dr. Roger Payne passed away yesterday. It was yesterday before I heard of his passing when we passed by and filmed a magnificent Fin whale that I had been thinking about Roger.  I first met Roger in Bergen, Norway in 1977 at the Marine Mammal Conference where I was impressed with his passionate advocacy for the whales. It was Roger who recorded the songs of the Humpback whales and…

OPERATION PAIAKAN

OPERATION PAIAKAN

OUR BOW IS FIRMLY POINTED TOWARD ICELAND June 11, 2023 This is the third day since our departure from New York City.  We have had three days of calm and pleasant seas complimented by numerous sightings of whales and sun fish. Everything is moving smoothly. We have an excellent international crew of volunteers, the meals are fantastic and the watches are enjoyable. The sighting of a Fin whale yesterday has given the crew much encouragement. Seeing the object of our…

OPERATION PAIAKAN

OPERATION PAIAKAN

June 10, 2023 0600 Hours: 48 Hours since our Departure from New York City Harbor What a wonderful beginning for the voyage of the John Paul DeJoria and Operation Paiakan. We passed a majestic Fin whale, the very whale that we are intending to save in the waters between Iceland and Greenland. We deployed a drone to capture its movement through the sea. We also noticed the many obstacles (fishing gear) that these whales need to avoid to prevent entanglement….

MORE MISINFORMATION ABOUT VAQUITA CONSERVATION

MORE MISINFORMATION ABOUT VAQUITA CONSERVATION

June 10, 2023 This report has some glaring misinformation. SSCS has not engaged in any confrontation with poachers since 2020,  but the report suggests this is an on-going situation. SSCS has not confiscated any illegal nets since Dec 31st, 2020. (link below) Barbara Taylor’s advice to deploy more concrete blocks with hooks is not very good advice. These hooks are designed to ensnare gill nets, causing such nets to become potentially lethal ghost nets, presenting an on-going threat to the Vaquita. I…

OPERATION PAIAKAN

OPERATION PAIAKAN

Noon June 10th, 2023 Numerous Sunfish sighted. These huge lazy fish seem undisturbed by the passing of ship.. Today the seas remain calm and glassy, more like a peaceful lake than the sea.
