MORE MISINFORMATION ABOUT VAQUITA CONSERVATION

MORE MISINFORMATION ABOUT VAQUITA CONSERVATION

June 10, 2023 This report has some glaring misinformation. SSCS has not engaged in any confrontation with poachers since 2020,  but the report suggests this is an on-going situation. SSCS has not confiscated any illegal nets since Dec 31st, 2020. (link below) Barbara Taylor’s advice to deploy more concrete blocks with hooks is not very good advice. These hooks are designed to ensnare gill nets, causing such nets to become potentially lethal ghost nets, presenting an on-going threat to the Vaquita. I…

Mexico’s Lack of Effort to Save the Vaquita is a Disgrace

Mexico’s Lack of Effort to Save the Vaquita is a Disgrace

June 9, 2023 It is absolutely unacceptable to be dropping more concrete blocks with hooks into the waters of the Vaquita Refuge. These hooks ensnare nets and present a further threat to the survival of the Vaquita. Barbara Taylor, as a scientist, should know better. Like SSCS, she has become a mouthpiece to the Mexican government. There is only one way to prevent the extinction of the Vaquita. 100% serious enforcement in the Vaquita Refuge, penalization of illegal fishing and…

A Drastic Situation Requires a Strong Reaction

A Drastic Situation Requires a Strong Reaction

May 27, 2023 Thank you to Secretary of the Interior. Thank you to all the people who messaged the Department of the Interior. Thank you, Secretary Deb Haaland, for revealing the ineffectiveness of the government of Mexico’s incompetent efforts to protect the endangered Vaquita. Despite SSCS’s defense of Mexico, the U.S. government understands the seriousness of the threat to the survival of the endangered Vaquita. The one language that all governments understand is money. Mexican fish products need to be…

Defending the Vaquita Reserve

Defending the Vaquita Reserve

May 21, 2023 The Captain Paul Watson Foundation would like to introduce Mike Bennett as our official representative in the Sea of Cortez and the Vaquita Reserve. Mike is a resident of San Felipe, Mexico and very concerned about the lack of action and progress in the effort to defend and protect the remaining highly endangered Vaquita porpoise.  Unless action is taken, the Vaquita is doomed to extinction. Monitoring and promises are not sufficient, and Mexico’s response has been inadequate. …

What a Colossally Stupid Idea

What a Colossally Stupid Idea

May 1, 2023 When this ridiculous and absurd deployment of hooked concrete blocks was first proposed, I told both Sea Pretenders and the Mexican government it was a really stupid idea. The hooks designed to snare nets render the nets into ghost nets, posing a real danger to the Vaquita and other marine life. There is only one solution to this problem, and that is to search out and confiscate illegally set nets, something we were doing very efficiently up…
