The Self-Censorship of Sea Shepherd History
December 28, 2023
If you look up the history on Google of some Sea Shepherd actions like this link for example, you will get: This content isn’t available right now.
When this happens, it’s usually because the owner only shared it with a small group of people, changed who can see it or it’s been deleted.

The reason I was forcefully and unlawfully removed from Sea Shepherd is because I was considered to be too radical and too controversial for the organization and movement I founded in 1977.
Since my removal, many postings about the history of Sea Shepherd activism have been removed. My pictures and bio and personal history have been removed. They called it the “Watson Problem”
My personal history and the history of real activism became an obstacle to corporate and governmental collaborations. People like Peter Hammarstedt and Alex Cornelisson said it was important to rebrand and to steer Sea Shepherd towards the mainstream, to be less confrontational and more collaborative. With a hostile take-over they seized the assets, the ships, and the list of supporters and donors. They never explained why, and they have refused to communicate with me ever since they cowardly sent me an email on September 2nd, 2022 informing me of my dismissal.
Jeff Hansen had me dismissed from the Australian Sea Shepherd Board for questioning the relationship between Sea Shepherd Australia and the Austral Toothfishing company and its partner the Japanese Maruha Daichiro fishing company.
As we come to the end of 2023, I can look back at the history that is being censored with great pride and feelings of achievement.
Thankfully Sea Shepherd France and Sea Shepherd Brazil continue to honor Sea Shepherd principles and objectives, strategies, and tactics although Sea Shepherd Global is suing Sea Shepherd France claiming absolute ownership of the name and movement I established and the flag and logos I created and designed.
It is also impossible for them to remove the episodes of Whale Wars and of course the thousands of articles and dozens of books that they have no control over. Their revisionism has limits.
Nevertheless, this is the history that Sea Shepherd wants to cancel, to erase and permanently remove:
Exactly 32 years ago on December 25th, I was in the Norwegian Lofoten Islands to give the whales of the world a Christmas present. We sent the outlaw Norwegian whaler Nybræna to the bottom of the harbor. Two years later we sent the outlaw Norwegian whaler Senet to the harbor bottom.\
A recap on the history of the Whale Wars to date:
1979 – I hunted down the pirate whaler Sierra and rammed it in the harbor of Leixoes, Portugal inflicting a million dollars in damage.
1980 – The Sierra was repaired and made ready to go to sea, so we sank it dockside in Lisbon harbor on February 6th, 1980. It was never raised, its illegal career permanently ended.
1980 – The Isba I and the Isba II, half the Spanish whaling fleet was sunk in Vigo harbor, Spain for killing Fin whales. We ended the career of both ships. The company never recovered financially, and Spanish whaling was ended in 1985.
1986 – The Icelandic whaling ships Hvalur 6 and Hvalur 7 were scuttled in Reykjavik harbor in November 1986. The whale processing factory was also sabotaged. Both whaling ships were permanently retired.
1988 – I turned myself in to Icelandic authorities to demand charges for the sinking of the two Icelandic whalers. Iceland refused to charge me and ordered me to leave Iceland.
1992 – The outlaw Norwegian whaler Nybræna was scuttled in the Lofoten Islands on Christmas day, 1992.
1994 – The outlaw Norwegian whaler Senet was scuttled in January 1994.
1996 – The outlaw Norwegian whaler Elin-Toril was scuttled in 1996.
1997 – The outlaw Norwegian whaler Morild was sunk in November 1997
2007 – The outlaw Norwegian whalers Willassen Senior was scuttled on August 31, 2007.
2009 – On April 23rd we outlaw Norwegian whaler Skarbakk was sunk in Henningsvaer, Norway
2005 – 2017: After years of confrontations, ramming, prop fouling, skirmishes and blocking of refueling operations the Japanese whaling fleet was forced to retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary saving over 6,500 whales.
This is the history that the mutineers who treacherously and cowardly took over Sea Shepherd want to see forgotten just as they want to see me personally forgotten.
As Peter Hammerstedt said in 2022, “in a few years no one will remember who Paul Watson is.”
I intend to make sure that people will remember the betrayal and the deceit of Peter Hammarstedt, along with his co-mutineers Alex Cornelissen, Geert Vons and Jeff Hansen.
Despite this betrayal, I have re-organized and founded the Captain Paul Watson Foundation and Neptune’s pirates to carry on with our original mission with our original strategies, objectives and tactics.
