THE THREE GRACES

THE THREE GRACES

November 28, 2023

Went to the Louvre with my daughter Lani last week and took this picture of THE THREE GRACES.

It reminded me that I wrote a poem a few years ago about The Three Graces.

The Eternal Dance of the Graces

Thalia moved across the floor with effortless grace,

Aglaia smiled at him, her charming alluring eyes sparkling,

Euphrosyne paralyzed him with her profoundly perfect beauty.

Three sisters, sacred feminine deities presiding in Thrace

Which one will be his submissive darling?

Which one will cause him to forsake his duty?

Can Ares set down his shield, sword and spear?

Can beauty tame the beast in the heart of God and man?

What is the cost for the attainment of grace?

Stripped of his armor, Ares stood naked in frozen fear.

As shadows spread across the lush verdant land

As a fierce anger rippled across his weathered worried face

Can Apollo shine in the face of splendorous grace?

Will his self esteem plummet before their perfection?

Will the dew and the mist douse his desires?

In humility his chariot quit the sacred chase

Not for him any desirable selection

For such a choice would dampen his immortal fires.

Can Vulcan ever hope to rise to meet her gaze?

Can his calloused hands stroke warm living silk?

Without tainting such flawlessness with soot?

In frustration he fed the flames and stoked the blaze

Retreating into his cave to gloomily sulk

Cursing his hated hunched-back and crippled clubbed foot.

Like a river they flowed gracefully to the sea

Where Poseidon’s arms encircled each beauteous form

Dressing each in a gossamer gown of gold.

He opened his arms and set them free

To dance in the center of a raging storm

Where they charmed and warmed the winds so cold

Energetically dancing across the sapphired palace floor

Elegantly swirling, hair flowing, hips swaying.

Until they reached and kissed the all father’s domain,

Stumbling upon his rocky shore,

Where the music stopped playing

And their tired tears fell like gentle rain.
