The Whales Are Still Not Safe from Icelandic Harpoons

June 25, 2023

Iceland’s modern-day Captain Ahab, the 80-year old Kristján Loftsson, intends to start killing whales again on September 1st if he is unsuccessful in overturning the ban this summer.

He is working to overturn the ban on whaling, working to replace the government of Iceland and working to secure a 5-year permit to continue killing endangered Fin whales.

Obsessed, angry and seeking revenge, Loftsson is seeking to recruit 32 votes in the Icelandic Parliament to overturn the temporary ban. However, the Icelandic Parliament is in recess for the next three weeks so the whales should be safe for the month of July.

Kristján Loftsson is the wealthiest man in Iceland and has a great deal of influence in the country. He is used to getting what he wants, and he is obsessed with wanting to continue to kill whales.

Loftsson insists that killing whales is humane despite documented evidence to the contrary. He intends to attach a high voltage wire to the harpoon to electrocute the whales after the harpoon strikes, claiming this will make whaling humane.

Today Loftsson’s crew fired at non-moving targets on shore missing each time. If they can’t hit a fixed target on land, they will have a difficult time striking a moving Fin whale in a vital spot.

We must be ready and prepared to return to Iceland at the end of August to confront this modern-day Captain Ahab once again.
